Roy Hargrove (1969-2018) was a trumpeter who succeeded not only through his soulful and versatile playing and compositions but also by seamlessly navigating different genres: jazz, hip-hop, and soul coexist harmoniously in his music. He collaborated with artists such as Erykah Badu, Herbie Hancock, Common, D’Angelo, Dianne Reeves, and Joe Henderson. Trumpeter Mikko “Gunu” Karjalainen honors Hargrove’s legacy by performing his music with his magnificent jazz quintet. Gunu’s lyrical interpretations of Hargrove’s extensive work, together with top musicians, bring new life to this music. Hargrove died of a heart attack in 2018 at the age of just 49, but he left behind a wealth of good music and fans around the world.
